Sargassum: cleaning of Cul de Sac has been delayed by the compagny in charge of the operation

The Sargassum seaweed are unfortunately back and have once again affected the northeast coast of Saint Martin. Hampering the everyday lives of the residents of the Cul-de-Sac, Mont Vernon and the Oyster Pond sectors.

“The presence of Sargassum is a real public health problem in Caribbean, but since the seaweed are primarily considered as waste by the State, their collection is the responsibility of the Collectivité”, said president Gibbs.

A specific public bid for Sargassum seaweed has been initiated last year, Gumbs Technique Nouvelle and Janky Environnement have been selected by the Collectivité.

It is a purchase order which requires the response of the company selected for each collection operation. As of the first alerts, last week, the Collective mobilized the companies awarded the bid.

Gumbs Technique Nouvelle, « the company assigned to cleaning the beaches of Coralita and Mont Vernon responded favorably to the compulsory administrative consultation. They will start cleaning up these two beaches in the coming days”, said Daniel Gibbs.

But, the second company company assigned to the cleaning of Cul-de-Sac beach has not responded to the compulsory administrative consultation, which delays the cleaning of this beach. “We are doing everything in our power to mobilize this company, which remains the sole recipient of this lot. The public bid procedures are strict, and we must comply with these legal obligations. If the company does not respond, we will have to restart a procedure”, added president of the Collectivité.
