New procedures for the exchange of a driving permit obtained in St Maarten
Until the establishment of driving schools on the French side, Saint Martiners had to take their driving test on the Dutch side. “The use of Sint Maarten driving schools is still widely accepted,” the Collectivité states. However, residing in France and holding a driving license which is not French is not compatible. This is why - in October 2010 - the COM established the conditions under which a permit obtained in Sint Maarten can be exchanged for a French driving license. “A subsequent review of applications revealed a strong demand from drivers who had obtained their permit through the Saba and Sint Eustatius authorities,” the COM explained. The Collectivité then intended to “strengthen the first exchange procedure” in July 2012 and March 2014. It was then possible to exchange (before 31 December 2014) one’s permit obtained in St Maarten, Saba or St Eustatius (between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2005).
Today, the COM asserted that a certain number of people resident on the French side holding a category A, B, C or D Dutch passport could not obtain a license renewal in Sint Maarten. They are “driving without a permit”. Accordingly, they decided to reinstate the exchange facility.
Thus, the persons in question can request a French driving license by 1 May and 31 December of this year, without having to take the theoretical test on the rules of the road or the road safety test.
They have to show evidence of their residence on the French side. They also have to bear a driving license issued in St Maarten issued before 1 January 2012. A certificate of authentication (“Attestation d’authentification”) will be required, as well as the payment of a fee of 200 euros.
